PRESENTACIÓN Al recorrer la presente exposición, en tan sólo unos minutos, nos permite conocer parte de la historia del cartel en los últimos ciento veinte años. Gracias a la investigación y selección de obra realizada por Trama Visual A.C., con el decidido apoyo de la Universidad Veracruzana y la Biblioteca de México, la Bienal Internacional del Cartel en México festeja su vigésimo aniversario, presentando una amplia mirada al cartel producido desde finales del siglo XIX hasta nuestros días. En 1988, cuando se iniciaba la organización de este espacio de encuentro internacional de diseñadores de los cinco continentes, nos preguntábamos si con la ayuda de las nuevas tecnologías del diseño e impresión digitales -mismas que ganaban por esos días su presencia en la realización del cartel-, podríamos presentar en una sola exposición la obra de creadores producidas en distintos espacios y momentos de nuestra reciente historia, con la intención de comparar estilos, confrontar ideas y recoger sus más variadas formas de expresión y estilos gráficos. De un sólo golpe, comprender la mirada y opinión de sus autores sobre las diferentes temáticas representadas en su obra. Construir de esta manera una mirada múltiple y atemporal, solamente equiparable a la visión producida a través del calidoscopio de la historia, nos permite la recuperación de una bella historia narrada a través de las expresiones creativas de ciento veinte autores representativos del cartel. Gracias al apoyo de Hewlett Packard, y las nuevas herramientas con las que hoy en día se construyen imágenes, nos dimos a la tarea de ir descubriendo los secretos de cada cartel que seleccionábamos por su belleza, su importancia histórica, su autor, su opinión, pero sobre todo por su inteligente forma de captar, representar y trasmitir realidades. Carteles diseñados por pintores, arquitectos, grabadores, diseñadores y autodidactas. Todos ellos creadores que demuestran con su propia obra, la versatilidad y fuerza expresiva del cartel, reivindicando un principio fundamental del diseño; decir lo más con lo menos. El cartel de los acontecimientos de la historia de la humanidad; la antigua Roma los leía en sus muros, convirtiéndose en una poderosa herramienta para todo aquel que necesita comunicar. En el XX el cartel se propone como en un espacio para la democratización de la imagen y su uso público. Abierto, sin fronteras ni ataduras, este principio de comunicación, plasmado en hojas de papel, ha sido también espacio lúdico de experimentación, de nuevas formas de comunicación, de creación de códigos y nuevos lenguajes y pionero en innovadoras utilizaciones del uso de la tecnología. El cartel ha sido compañero de las causas más nobles pero también cómplice de la guerra y la explotación, de la discriminación y de los más bajos instintos del ser humano. Fue fiel reflejo de la humanidad, de sus odios y amores, de sus logros y vergüenzas es un espejo en donde siempre aparece el ser humano representando sus pensamientos, sus propuestas, sus creencias… metáforas visuales y ejercicios tipográficos que nos hablan, nos convencen, nos atrapan, nos agradan o disgustan, provocándonos reflexiones, cambios de actitudes, formas de vida y propuestas de convivencia. The poster has been a companion of the most noble reasons but also accomplice of the war and the exploitation, the discrimination and of the lowest instincts of the human being. It was a faithful reflection of the humanity, of its hatreds and loves, of its achievements and shames it is a mirror where the human being always appears representing its thoughts, its proposals, its beliefs … visual metaphors and typographical exercises that tells us, convince us, catch us, please or upset us, provoking reflections, changes of attitudes, forms of life and offers of coexistence. Impresos originalmente en litografía, prensa plana, offset o serigrafía, después de recorrer todas las posibilidades expresivas por parte de sus autores, la colección que hoy se presenta en este recinto histórico, el cual vio nacer las primeras actividades de la Bienal Internacional del Cartel en México, ha sido posible gracias a la colaboración de autores, coleccionistas y editores que amablemente nos han permitido la reproducción de estos carteles para deleite del público asistente. PRESENTATION Looking around this presentation, in only a few minutes, it allows us to know part of the history of the posters in the last one hundred and twenty years. Thanks to the research and selection of work done by Trama Visual A.C., with the support of the Universidad Veracruzana and the Library of Mexico, the International Biennial of Mexico’s Poster celebrates its twentieth anniversary, presenting a wide look to the poster produced since the end of the XIX until nowadays. In 1988, when this organization started this space for designers' international meeting of five continents, we wondered if with the help of the new digital technologies of the design and digital printing – the same which were gaining those days your presence in the accomplishment of the poster-, we could present in only one exhibition the creators' work produced in different spaces and moments of our recent history, with the intention of comparing styles, confronting ideas and pick up its most varied forms of expression and graphic designs. At the same time, understand the glance and opinion of its authors about the different themes represented in its work. Construct on this way a multiple glance(look) and a temporal, only comparable to the vision produced across the kaleidoscope of the history, it allows us the recovery of one beautiful story narrated by means of the creative expressions of one hundred and twenty representative authors of the poster. Thanks to Hewlett Packard's support, and the new tools with those who nowadays images are made, we gave each other to the task of being discovering the secrets of each poster that we selected by its beauty, its historical importance, its author, its opinion, but overall for its intelligent way of receiving, representing and transmitting realities. Posters designed by painters, architects, engravers, designers and self-taught. All of them creators who demonstrate with its own work, the versatility and expressive strength of the poster, demanding a fundamental principle of design; say the most with the less. The poster of events of the humanity history; the ancient Rome read them in its walls, turning into a powerful tool for everyone who needs to communicate. In the XX century the poster proposes as in a space for the democratization of the image and its public use. Opened, without borders or ties, this mean of communication, formed of sheets of paper, has been also a recreational space of experimentation, of new forms of communication, of the creation of codes and new languages and pioneer in innovative utilizations of the use of technology. Printed originally in lithography, flat press, offset or silk-screen printing, after crossing all the expressive possibilities by its authors, the collection that today is represented in this historical enclosure, which saw the birth of the first activities of the International Biennial of Mexico’s Poster, has been possible thanks to the collaboration of authors, collectors and publishers who nicely have let us reproduce these posters for the joy of the attending audience.
